5 Things You Need To Know About A Fiddle Leaf Fig

The Fiddle Leaf Fig is one of our favourites at OMG HQ - we LOVE & adore them! Their gorgeous, glossy glow and lush leaves make them a beautiful indoor plant and they’re so easy to look after.

So here are the 5 Things You NEED To Know About The Fiddle Leaf Fig:

1. Position is everything

Figs love being in a light filled spot, but hot sunny windows... not so much as their leaves will burn. 

Keep your Fiddle Leaf away from both hot and cold air –  so don’t put it directly near  a heaters or air conditioners.

TIP - don’t forget a drip tray wherever you place your fig! It’s not nice to have your feet sitting in stale water, so don’t do it to your fig either.

2. Figs love to be loved, just not too much.

Figs like to be watered well, they also love to dry out slightly in between. 

We take ours to the shower rather than dragging them outside & give them 2 big waterings with our handheld shower head, they love it, of course, less in the colder months (try not to wet the leaves too much when you water them).

Use slow-release fertiliser in spring, it should last for about 6 months.

3. Take it or leave it, it’s up to you.

When you notice the leaves on your Fiddle Fig showing a rusty colour, it’s time for a trim. You can always prune the stem and leaves with sharp secateurs but be careful not to cut off any new buds from the stem (those small brown buds are your new leaves on their way).

PS: Shine Hack - use leaf shine, not on both sides of the leaves only the glossy green side not underneath.

4. It’s time to move on!

Figs are pretty slow to grow, particularly in winter but if yours seems stagnant, it may be pot-bound. Re-potting it is so easy.

First things first, pick a pot you love and make sure its the next size up from what you’ve currently got. Then add your potting mix into the new pot - make it around ⅓ full to start with. Now loosen your fig out of it’s current pot, tease out the roots and place it into your new pot. Add more potting mix, water and put your fig back in its favourite place!
